Rääkkylä (Finnish pronunciation:[ˈræːkːylæ];Swedish alsoBräkylä) is amunicipality ofFinland. It is located in theprovince ofEastern Finland and is part of theNorth Kareliaregion. The municipality has a population of 1,858 (30 June 2025),[2] which make it the smallest municipality in North Karelia in terms of population. It covers an area of 699.68 square kilometres (270.15 sq mi) of which 272.01 km2 (105.02 sq mi) is water.[1] Thepopulation density is 4.34 inhabitants per square kilometre (11.2/sq mi). The municipality is unilinguallyFinnish.
The municipality has previously also been known as "Bräkylä" inSwedish documents, but is today referred to as "Rääkkylä" also in Swedish.[6]
Rääkkylä as an independent municipality was established in 1874 from parts ofKitee andLiperi. Neighbouring municipalities areJoensuu, Kitee, Liperi,Savonlinna andTohmajärvi.
Leading Finnishkantele manufacturerKoistinen Kantele has been functioning in Rääkkylä since 1995.
In the 15th century, the current Rääkkylä belonged to Kitee and paid taxes toNovgorod. It was a troubled border region, with disputes between Sweden and Novgorod, and betweenOrthodox andLutherans.[7] In the 17th century, an important trade route forRussians andKarelians passed through Rääkkylä.[8] Rääkkylä was ordered to become independent from Kitee's chapel congregation in 1857.[7]
