Quercus is a formerly independent publishing house, based inLondon, that was acquired byHodder & Stoughton in 2014. It was founded in 2004 by Mark Smith and Wayne Davies.[1]
Quercus is known for its lists in crime (publishing such authors asElly Griffiths,Philip Kerr,Peter May,Peter Temple), its MacLehose Press imprint (formerly headed byChristopher MacLehose),[2] which publishes translated (often prize-winning) works by authors such asPhilippe Claudel,Stieg Larsson,[3] andValerio Varesi, its literary fiction titles (including byKimberley Freeman,Prajwal Parajuly) and its Jo Fletcher Books imprint, which publishesscience fiction,fantasy andhorror.
In 2023, Jo Fletcher Books was renamed to Arcadia.[4]
Smith and Davies had previously worked together at theOrion Publishing Group.
In 2011, Quercus was chosen as theBonnier Publishing Publisher of the Year at theBookseller Industry Awards in London.[5]
American imprint SilverOak was co-owned withSterling Publishing.[6] In March 2016, Quercus launched fiction and non-fiction imprint riverrun.[7]
