Queen Philippa at the Battle of Neville's Cross is a 1789history painting by the Anglo-American artistBenjamin West.[1][2] It depicts the 1346Battle of Neville's Cross during theHundred Years' War. It depictsPhilippa of Hainault,queen consort ofEngland, on horseback rallying her forces. On the left of the painting is the Scottish monarchDavid II fighting on foot and about to be captured.[3]
It was one of eight paintingscommissioned byGeorge III depicting scenes fromEnglish history, seven of them relating to the reign ofEdward III, to decorate the refurbished audience chamber atWindsor Castle.[4] This painting was commissioned for 500guineas and was exhibited at theRoyal Academy'sSummer Exhibition of 1793 atSomerset House.[3]
