Quỳnh Lưu is arural district ofNghệ An province, in the northmost part of the lankyCentral Coast region ofVietnam.
In the area of Quỳnh Lưurural district about 1956, an international shocking political event occurred, which was often called theQuỳnh Lưu uprising (Khởi nghĩa Quỳnh Lưu) bySouth Vietnamese historians.
At least two Catholicvillages have been armed to protest the brutalland reform policy of the Central Government ofNorth Vietnam. This action has bloated thefire of anger across the North and caused theDemocratic Republic of Vietnam leaders to seriously divide.
In order to extinguish theeffect of the oil spot, the government ofHồ Chí Minh personally mobilized two elitedivisions to his homeland "to punish the rebellious" (dẹp tan bè-lũ phản-động). Although the evolution of the event was lighter bycommunist communication organizations, the information about it still followed the fugents to go around the world.
TheNgô Đình Diệm government has made this opportunity to organize an internationalpress conference inSaigon to denounce the crimes of the North regime. During the next two years, the people ofSouth Vietnam continued to organize marches and exhibitions to express their communion with the fate of theircompatriots in the North of the17th parallel. From then until 1975 when theRepublic of Vietnam collapsed, the catastrophic event in Quỳnh Lưu was included in the historytextbook.
Its nameQuỳnh-lưu was aHanese word, what appeared in 1430 by theEarly Lê Dynasty. By scholarsThiều Chửu [vi] andLê Chí Quế's ideas, it could be a negative way ofMalayo-Polynesian nameKeluar orKuala ("theseaport"), which is repeated in many locations along thePacific Ocean. Previously, it belonged to anarea without official boundaries, which was still called asVọng-giang by some local officials fromTang Dynasty.
Thisrural district is often said to be the hometown of an 18th-century literary figure : FemalepoetHồ Xuân Hương.
As of 1 April 2019, Quỳnh Lưu rural district had a population of 276,259. However, from 2003 to present, the wholerural district has continuously reduced the population because the situation of young people pulled together to the cities to seek employment opportunities, and the quality ofagriculture of the locality is not high, while theindustry has very little potential.
It covers an area of 609 km2, that is, it is equivalent toSingapore Island. Previously, its capital was located at block 3 of Cầu Giát township ("the bridge of Giát"), however, the district central agency has been transferred to hamlet 7 of Quỳnh Hồng commune since 2024.
Currently, Quỳnh Lưu has all 33commune-leveladministrative units.
