Qaem Shahr (Persian :قائمشهر ;pronunciation ⓘ )[ a] is a city in theCentral District ofQaem Shahr County ,Mazandaran province,Iran , serving as capital of both the county and the district.[ 5] Originally known asŜâhi was used until theIranian Revolution in 1979 when the city acquired its current name.[ 6]
In 1951, Qaem Shahr'spopulation was around 18,000, growing to 123,684 in 1991.[citation needed ] At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 174,246 in 48,055 households.[ 7] The following census in 2011 counted 196,050 people in 60,347 households.[ 8] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 204,953 people in 68,407 households.[ 3]
The city is 228 kilometres (142 mi) northeast ofTehran viaroad 79 which passes throughShirgah ,Pol-e Sefid andFiruzkuh . It is also 19 kilometres (12 mi) southeast ofBabol ; and 23 kilometres (14 mi) southwest ofSari , the capital of the province, connected to both byroad 22 .[ 9]
Qaem Shahr is where the North Iranian railway quits the fertile plains of Mazandaran to cross the highest mountain range of the Middle East, theAlborz .
