Pythagoras, orPythagoras the Spartan (Ancient Greek:Πυθαγόρας), was amercenaryGreekadmiral hired to command the first fleet ofCyrus the Younger during his campaign to claim thePersian throne during 401 BC. Pythagoras led a fleet of 35triremes as a backup force to Cyrus'shoplites of theTen Thousand and his ownPersian troops.
Pythagoras led Cyrus' first fleet, the second being led byTamos the Egyptian consisting of 25 triremes. Pythagoras's fleet is known to be from thePeloponnese.
Pythagoras is stated asLacedaemonian, it is however not known if he is directly fromSparta.
