Puccinia is agenus offungi. All species in this genus are obligateplant pathogens and are known asrusts.[1] The genus contains about 4000 species.[2]
The genus name ofPuccinia is in honour of Tommaso Puccini (died 1735), who was an Italian doctor andbotanist who taught anatomy atHospital of Santa Maria Nuova inFlorence.[3]
The genus wascircumscribed byPier Antonio Micheli in Nov. Pl. Gen. on page 213 in 1729.
