Thepterygoid fossa is ananatomical term for thefossa formed by the divergence of thelateral pterygoid plate and themedial pterygoid plate of thesphenoid bone.

Structure

The lateral and medial pterygoid plates (of thepterygoid process of thesphenoid bone) diverge behind and enclose between them a V-shaped fossa, thepterygoid fossa. This fossa faces posteriorly, and contains themedial pterygoid muscle and thetensor veli palatini muscle.
