Psalm 140 is the 140th psalm of theBook of Psalms, beginning in English in theKing James Version: "Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man". In the slightly different numbering system used in the GreekSeptuagint version of the Bible, and the LatinVulgate, this psalm isPsalm 139. In Latin, it is known asEripe me Domine ab homine malo.[1] It is part of the final Davidic collection of psalms, comprisingPsalms 138 to145, which are specifically attributed toDavid in their opening verses.[2]It describes putting one's trust in God while threatened with evil.[3] TheNew King James Version entitles it a "Prayer for Deliverance from Evil Men".[4]

The psalm is used as a regular part ofJewish,Catholic,Lutheran,Anglican and other Protestant liturgies; it has beenset to music.

Structure

[edit]

The Hebrew wordSelah, possibly an instruction on the reading of the text, breaks the psalm after verses 3, 5 and 8. C. S. Rodd argues that the psalm's structure is unclear, but suggests:

  • Verses 1-5: a prayer for help
  • Verses 6-7: an expression of confidence in God
  • Verses 8-11: an appeal against the psalmist's enemies
  • Verses 12-13: another expression of confidence in God, which may reflect a priestly or prophetic assurance that the psalmist's prayer has been heard.[5]

Uses

[edit]

New Testament

[edit]

In theNew Testament, verse 3b,The poison ofasps is under their lips, is quoted inRomans3:13.[6]

[edit]

Heinrich Schütz composed a metred paraphrase of Psalm 140 in German, "Von bösen Menschen rette mich",SWV 245, for theBecker Psalter, published first in 1628.

Éric Gaudibert composed a setting in Latin,Eripe me, Domine, for mixed double chorus a cappella in 1978.Herman Berlinski wroteA Psalm of Unity, for soprano, mezzo-soprano and two altos, with from Psalm 140 andPsalm 133 in 1980.

[edit]

The following table shows the Hebrew text[7][8] of the Psalm with vowels, alongside theKoine Greek text in theSeptuagint[9] and the English translation from theKing James Version. Note that the meaning can slightly differ between these versions, as the Septuagint and theMasoretic Text come from different textual traditions.[note 1] In the Septuagint, this psalm is numbered Psalm 139.
