Proteus Airlines was a Frenchregional airline with its head offices inSaint-Apollinaire,Côte-d'Or,France,[1] nearDijon, and inSaint-Étienne.[2] Founded in 1986, it remained operational until its merger intoRégional in 2001.[3]
The airline was originally established in 1986 asProteus Air System. In May 1996, it began scheduled services under its new nameProteus Airlines. In 1997 the airline acquired a regional airline,Air Transport Pyrénées and its fleet ofBeech 1900 andBeech King Air, while in August signed a franchise agreement withAir France. In October 1999 Proteus acquired another regional airline,Flandre Air.[1] On 30 March 2001, Proteus, Flandre, andRegional Airlines merged intoRégional, itself merged intoHOP! in 2013.[2] In 1996, the airline transported 50,000 passengers.[4]

On 30 July 1998, aBeechcraft 1900D, operating asProteus Airlines Flight 706 fromLyon toLorient inBrittany, was hit by a privately ownedCessna 177RG overQuiberon Bay, killing all 15 people on board both aircraft. The biggest contributing factor to the accident was the crew of the 1900D electing to take a detour to fly around theSSNorway. While finishing the sightseeing pass over the ship and shifting their attention to landing preparations, the crew did not use thesee and avoid concept that was part of thevisual flight rules they were operating under. In addition, the pilot of the Cessna had neglected to turn on his plane's transponder, effectively making the aircraft invisible to radar systems on the ground.
