Aprogonadotropin, orhypergonadotropin, also known as agonad stimulant, is a type ofdrug which increases thesecretion of one or both of the majorgonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) andfollicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).[1] This, in turn, results in increased function and maintenance of thegonads and increased gonadalsteroidogenesis ofsex hormones such asandrogens, estrogens, andprogestogens. Progonadotropins are the functional opposites ofantigonadotropins. They have clinical applications in the treatment ofhypogonadism andinfertility.[2] Conversely, hypergonadotropic effects can occur as aside effect of some drugs. Examples of progonadotropic drugs includegonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)agonists when administered in apulsatile (as opposed to continuous) manner, antiestrogens such astamoxifen, clomifene, fulvestrant, andaromatase inhibitors likeanastrozole,[2] and, only in men, pureantiandrogens such asflutamide, bicalutamide, enzalutamide, andapalutamide.[3]
