Prince Joseph Wenzel of Liechtenstein, Count of Rietberg (Joseph Wenzel Maximilian Maria; born 24 May 1995) is the eldest child ofAlois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, and his wife,Duchess Sophie Elizabeth Marie Gabrielle in Bavaria, He is also the eldest grandchild of the current rulingprince of Liechtenstein,Hans-Adam II, andCountess Marie Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau.[1]
He is second in theline of succession to the Liechtensteiner throne through his father.[2]
Prince Joseph Wenzel was born on 24 May 1995 at thePortland Hospital in theWest End ofLondon to Hereditary Prince Alois and his wife Hereditary Princess Sophie (née Duchess Sophie in Bavaria).[2] He has three younger siblings:Princess Marie Caroline, Prince Georg and Prince Nikolaus.[2] The Prince is named Joseph Wenzel Maximilian Maria afterJoseph Wenzel I, Prince of Liechtenstein, his maternal grandfatherPrince Max, Duke in Bavaria, his paternal uncle and godfatherPrince Maximilian of Liechtenstein.[3] He is informally known as Prince Wenzel.[4]
Prince Joseph Wenzel was educated atMalvern College, a coeducational boarding school inWorcestershire, England.[2] He graduated from Malvern College in 2014.[3] He spent a gap year pursuing an internship at theUnited States Senate and travelling toPeru andBolivia.[4]
Since birth, Joseph Wenzel has borne the titles "Prince of Liechtenstein" and "Count of Rietberg." He is second in line for the throne ofLiechtenstein, preceded only by his father, who has beenregent since 15 August 2004.[5] However, Joseph Wenzel's grandfatherPrince Hans-Adam II formally remainshead of state and of thePrincely House of Liechtenstein. Upon the accession of his father, Joseph Wenzel would become the hereditary prince (Erbprinz), i.e. theheir apparent to the throne.[5]
Joseph Wenzel is also third in line in theJacobite succession as successor to the current heir, his maternal grand-uncleFranz, Duke of Bavaria.[6] If he becomes the Jacobite claimant, he would be the first to be born in Britain since "James III and VIII" (James Francis Edward Stuart, or the "Old Pretender") in 1688.
