
Prime Seal Island is a long island, with a high central ridge and an area of 1220ha, in south-easternAustralia. It is part ofTasmania’s Prime Seal Island Group, lying in easternBass Strait west ofFlinders in theFurneaux Group. Geologically, it islimestone overlyinggranite and has notablekarst features, including caves. It is leased for farming and is extensively grazed by sheep and cattle as well as the nativeTasmanian pademelons.[1]
Large numbers of seals were reported here in 1827.[2] Recorded breedingseabird andwader species areshort-tailed shearwater andsooty oystercatcher.White-bellied sea-eagles have nested on the island.Reptiles include thetiger snake,metallic skink andthree-lined skink.Cats,house mice andIndian peafowl have been introduced.[1]
The shipCity of Edinburgh wrecked on the island on 11 July 1840.[3]
