Presumed Innocent is an Americanlegal thriller television series created byDavid E. Kelley, based on the 1987novel of the same name byScott Turow. The book was previously adapted into the1990 film starringHarrison Ford andBrian Dennehy. It premiered onApple TV+ on June 12, 2024.[1] In July 2024, the series was renewed for a second season.[2] The second season will be based onDissection of a Murder by Jo Murray.[3]
Since its debut,Presumed Innocent has garnered significant acclaim asApple TV+'s most-watched drama, praised for its "endlessly watchable" performance byJake Gyllenhaal and lauded as "one of the best legal thrillers to arrive on television in years."[4][5]
The first season received four acting nominations at77th Primetime Emmy Awards for Gyllenhaal, Negga, Camp and Sarsgaard.

In February 2022, it was announced thatApple TV+ had ordered an eight-episode miniseries adaptation ofScott Turow's novelPresumed Innocent created byDavid E. Kelley who also executive produced alongsideDustin Thomason,J. J. Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich,Ben Stephenson, and Matthew Tinker. Kelley also served as showrunner.[14] In December,Jake Gyllenhaal entered negotiations to star and executive produce.[15] He would be confirmed by January 2023, withRuth Negga,Bill Camp andElizabeth Marvel joining the cast.Greg Yaitanes andAnne Sewitsky were hired to direct.[16][17] In February, additional actors cast includedRenate Reinsve,Peter Sarsgaard,O-T Fagbenle,Lily Rabe andNana Mensah.[18][19]Noma Dumezweni,Gabby Beans and Sarunas J. Jackson joined the cast in March.[20]
Filming for the series began in February 2023 inPasadena, California.[21]
On July 12, 2024, Apple TV+ renewed the series for a second season.[2] On October 29, 2024, it was reported that the upcoming novelDissection of a Murder by Jo Murray is to be used as a source material for the second season.[22] On June 10, 2025,Rachel Brosnahan was cast in a lead role for the second season.[6] On July 29, 2025,Jack Reynor joined the starring cast.[7] On September 11, 2025,Matthew Rhys was cast in a main role.[8] In October 2025,Fiona Shaw andCourtney B. Vance joined the starring cast whileJohn Magaro andMichael Hsu Rosen were cast in recurring capacities for the second season.[9][11][12] On November 14, 2025,Lesley-Ann Brandt was cast as a series regular for the second season.[10]
Presumed Innocent had its world premiere at the 2024Tribeca Film Festival on June 9, 2024, and was released onApple TV+ on June 12, 2024.[1]
Thereview aggregator websiteRotten Tomatoes reported a 76% approval rating with an average rating of 7/10, based on 68 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Enlivened by an outstanding ensemble,Presumed Innocent isn't guilty of upstaging the original movie but acquits itself well as an entertaining courtroom drama."[23]Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 64 out of 100 based on 33 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[24]
In a review forVariety, Aramide Tinubu calledPresumed Innocent "one of the best legal thrillers to arrive on television in years". She also praised the development of the characters, especially Gyllenhaal's Sabich.[25] Lucy Mangan ofThe Guardian was less effusive, awarding the show 3 out of 5 stars. Mangan described it as "an efficient tale, with good performances. But it's soullessly slick, fails to properly develop female characters and all feels meaningless".[26] A negative review from Mike Hale ofThe New York Times criticized the show's "claustrophobic atmosphere, the emphasis on psychology and trite family drama". Hale's review also disliked the performances, writing "Gyllenhaal is sweaty, jumpy and over the top".[27]
