The Press Trust of India Ltd., commonly known asPTI, is the largestnews agency inIndia.[5] It is headquartered inNew Delhi and is a nonprofitcooperative among more than 450 Indian newspapers.[6] It has over 500 full-time employees as of 1 January 2022[update], including about 400 journalists. It also has nearly 400 part-time correspondents in most of the district headquarters of the country.[7] PTI also has correspondents in major capitals and important business centres around the world. It was incorporated in Madras in 1947 withThe Hindu's proprietor, Kasturi Srinivasan, as its Founding Chairman. It took over the operations of theAssociated Press of India fromReuters in 1948–49.[8][9] It provides news coverage and information of the region in bothEnglish andHindi.[10][11][12][13]

PTI exchanges information with several other news agencies including 100 news agencies based outside India, such asAssociated Press,Agence France-Presse,The New York Times andBloomberg L.P. Major Indian subscribers of PTI includeThe Hindu,The Times of India,The Indian Express,Hindustan Times,The Statesman,The Tribune,News 18,NDTV,India Today, theAll India Radio,Doordarshan, andThe Wire. PTI has offices inBangkok,Beijing,Colombo,Dubai,Islamabad,Kuala Lumpur,Moscow,New York City, andWashington D.C.[14]

Its currentchairman isAveek Sarkar.[15] He is also the vice chairman ofABP group.[16]
