Sherwood Press Taylor (born January 13, 1988) is anAmerican football coach who serves as the passing game coordinator for theChicago Bears of theNational Football League (NFL). He previously held assistant coaching positions with theIndianapolis Colts andPhiladelphia Eagles and served as the offensive coordinator for theJacksonville Jaguars.
Taylor won back-to-back NJCAA national championships atButler Community College as the starting quarterback. He chose Marshall in the December signing period, knowing Division 1 would appear stronger on his future coaching resume, and served as a backup for the Thundering Herd.[1]
Taylor joined theUniversity of Tulsa coaching staff under head coachBill Blankenship in 2011 as the offensive graduate assistant and quarterbacks coach (Tulsa did not have a full-time QB coach, allowing Taylor to handle those duties).[2] During his 2 seasons at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane compiled a 19–8 record and won the 2012 Conference USA Championship as well as the 2012 AutoZone Liberty Bowl defeating Iowa State. In 2011, under Taylor's direction, senior quarterbackG. J. Kinne was named 2nd Team All-C-USA and threw for over 3,000 yards.
In 2013, Taylor was hired by thePhiladelphia Eagles as an offensive quality control coach under head coachChip Kelly.[3] With the hiring of new head coachDoug Pederson in 2016, Taylor was retained and promoted to offensive quality control and assistant quarterbacks coach under new offensive coordinatorFrank Reich.[4] He was part of the coaching staff that wonSuper Bowl LII and is credited with the "Philly Special" play which gave the Eagles a touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half.[5] After the 2017 season, Taylor was again promoted, this time to quarterbacks coach to replaceJohn DeFilippo who left at the end of the season to become offensive coordinator for theMinnesota Vikings.[6] Taylor added the title of passing game coordinator on February 5, 2020, reporting directly to Pederson.[7] He missed the team's week 11 game in 2020 against theCleveland Browns due toCOVID-19 pandemic protocols.[8] The Eagles fired Pederson after a 4–11–1 season,[9] and the passing staff was not retained.[10][11]
For the 2021 season, Taylor served as a senior offensive assistant toIndianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich.[12] They organized a trade to obtain Eagles quarterbackCarson Wentz, reuniting three key offensive strategists from the Eagles' Super Bowl winning season.[10]
On February 17, 2022, Taylor was hired by theJacksonville Jaguars as their offensive coordinator under head coachDoug Pederson.[13]
On January 29, 2025, theChicago Bears hired Taylor to serve as their pass-game coordinator underBen Johnson.[14]
Taylor grew up inNorman, Oklahoma and is the younger brother ofCincinnati Bengals head coachZac Taylor. He also has two sisters. Taylor's father, Sherwood, was a defensive back forOklahoma and head coachBarry Switzer from 1977 to 1979 and a former coach.[15][16][17]
Taylor is married to Brooklyn Scheer, whom he met at Tulsa.[18] The couple have four children as of June 2023.[19]
