Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon (Sinhala:ප්රමිත බණ්ඩාර තෙන්නකෝන්; born 11 September 1978) is aSri Lankan politician, former Cabinet Minister, former provincial minister andMember of Parliament.[1] He served as theMinister of Ports and Shipping in theCabinet of PresidentGotabaya Rajapaksa.[2]
Tennakoon was born on 11 September 1978.[1] He is the son ofJanaka Bandara Tennakoon and grandson ofT. B. Tennekoon, both government ministers.[3] He was educated atSt. Peter's College, Colombo.[4] He has aLLB degree from theUniversity of Buckingham andLLM degree fromLa Trobe University.[4] He was member of the diplomatic staff the Sri Lankan embassy inCairo, Egypt.[4]
Tennakoon was a member of theCentral Provincial Council and Minister for Sports, Youth Affairs, Women's Affairs and Rural Industries Development for theCentral Province.[5][6] He contested the2020 parliamentary election as aSri Lanka People's Freedom Allianceelectoral alliance candidate inMatale District and was elected to theParliament of Sri Lanka.[7][8][9]
Following the mass resignation of the Sri Lankan cabinet in the wake of the2022 Sri Lankan protests, he was appointed as theMinister of Ports and Shipping by PresidentGotabaya Rajapaksa on 18 April 2022.[10] He served until 9 May 2022 following another mass resignation of the Sri Lankan cabinet.[11]
