Praenetus orPrainetos (Ancient Greek:Πραίνετος), also known asPrinetos orPrinetus (Πρίνετος)[1] was a town ofancient Bithynia on the coast of thePropontis. It is on the east of Karamürsel and at the southern entrance of theSinus Astacenus. It was situated 28Roman miles to the northwest ofNicaea.Stephanus of Byzantium calls itPronectus orPronektos (Πρόνεκτος) and states that it was founded by thePhoenicians. If this be true, it would be a very ancient place, which can scarcely be conceived, as it is mentioned only by very late writers.[2][1] According toCedrenus it was destroyed by an earthquake.[3] It was a bishopric; no longer the seat of a residential bishop, it remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church.[4]
Its site is located nearKaramürsel, inAsiatic Turkey.[5][6]
