Poundon is ahamlet and acivil parish in theBuckinghamshire district of the county ofBuckinghamshire, England. It is located near theOxfordshire border, about four miles northeast ofBicester, three miles southwest ofSteeple Claydon.
The hamlet name isAnglo Saxon in origin, though its meaning is uncertain. Inmanorial rolls of 1255 it was recorded asPaundon.
Poundon Hill wireless station was aFCO/MI6signals intelligence station just outside the hamlet.[3] The site is now Tower Hill Business Park. During theSecond World War Poundon and Poundon House were sites of stations 53b and 53c of theSpecial Operations Executive (SOE).[4]
On the other side of the road was the American Station CHARLES, another secret radio communications facility operated by theSpecial Operations Branch (SO) of theOffice of Strategic Services (OSS). Station CHARLES was operated bySO/London for roughly a year between 1943 and 1944, before the operators were moved to join SI atStation Victor.[5]
