Portuguese in Sweden (Swedish:Svensksportugiser) are citizens and residents of Sweden who are ofPortuguese descent.

Portuguese Swedes are Portuguese-born citizens with aSwedish citizenship or Swedish-born citizens of Portugueseancestry orcitizenship.

There are approximately 5,033Portuguese people living in Sweden as of 2022. The Portuguese represent 0.05% of thecountry's population.[2]

History

The Portuguese community in thecountry has experienced considerable growth, especially afterBrexit. Portuguese emigrants are in fact leaving the United Kingdom forNordic countries: most of them arehighly qualified and aged between20 and 40, looking for betterquality of life and economic stability.[3] The influx of Portuguese migrants towards the country is steadily increasing and there are 5 Portuguese associations in the country.[4][5][6][7]Both countries areEU members.

Footballers

In recent years manyPortuguese international footballers have moved to Sweden to play forSwedish clubs. In 2023 these included:Ieltsin Camões (IK Brage),Filipe Sissé (Varbergs BoIS),Mamadu Djau (Örebro),Luís Canina (IFK Luleå) andKevin Cerqueira (BK Häcken).[8][9][10][11][12][13]

Remittances

The Portuguese community in Sweden retains strong ties with its homeland and, between 2000 and 2021, it has sent about 162.5 millioneuros () to Portugal in remittances. In the same timeframe,Swedes in Portugal (numbering around 5,700 individuals)[14] have sent approximately 19.81 million euros to Sweden.[15]

thePortuguese are part of a wider Portuguese-speaking community in Sweden, comprising around 1,920 people fromPALOP countries (the majority being fromAngola or fromCape Verde),Timor-Leste andMacau and around 20,000Brazilians.[16][17]

People fromCPLP countries thus number around 27,000 accounting for 0.25% of thepopulation of Sweden.[18]

The immigrant community of people coming fromCPLP countries in Sweden is the largest found among theNordic countries: inFinland there are a little more than 5,000CPLP nationals (0.09% of thecountry's population),[19][20] inDenmark there are around 11,000CPLP nationals (0.19% of thecountry's population)[21][22][23] while inIceland there are around 2,000CPLP nationals (0.52% of thecountry's population),[24][25][26][27][28] and inNorway there are around 25,300CPLP nationals (0.38% of thepopulation).[29][30][31][32]
