Portuguese in Denmark (Danish:portugisisk i Danmark) are citizens and residents ofDenmark and itsdependencies who are ofPortuguese descent.

Portuguese in Denmark (also known asPortuguese Danes/Danish-Portuguese Community or, inPortuguese, known asPortugueses na Dinamarca /Comunidade portuguesa na Dinamarca /Luso-dinamarqueses) are the citizens or residents of Denmark whose ethnic origins lie inPortugal.

Portuguese Danes are Portuguese-born citizens with aDanish citizenship or Danish-born citizens of Portugueseancestry orcitizenship.

There are approximately 4,476Portuguese people living in Denmark as of 2021. They represent 0.08% of thecountry's population.[2][3]

History

The Portuguese community in thecountry has experienced considerable growth, especially afterBrexit. Portuguese emigrants are in fact leaving the United Kingdom forNordic countries: most of them arehighly qualified and aged between20 and 40, looking for betterquality of life and economic stability.[4][5] Portuguese emigration towards Denmark didn't slow down even amidst theCOVID-19 pandemic.[6]

There are also Portuguese living in territories of theDanish Realm other than metropolitanDenmark: in 2023 there were 8 Portuguese-born residents inFaroe Islands and 10 inGreenland.[7][8]

Footballers

In recent years manyPortuguese international footballers have moved to Denmark to play forDanish clubs. In 2023 these included:Carlos Ferreira (in theFaroe Islands,Skála ÍF), André Monteiro (Vejle),Anderson Rosso de Sena (Brabrand),Pedro Ferreira (AaB) andDiogo Gonçalves (Copenhagen).[9][10][11]

Remittances

The Portuguese community in Denmark retains strong ties with its homeland and, between 2000 and 2021, it has sent approximately 92.84 millioneuros () to Portugal inremittances. In the same timeframe,Danes in Portugal (numbering around 1,600 individuals)[12] have sent approximately 11.13 million euros (€) to Denmark.[13]

As of today, thePortuguese are part of a wider Portuguese-speaking community in Denmark, comprising around 720 people fromPALOP countries (the overwhelming majority being fromAngola or fromMozambique),Timor-Leste orMacau and 5,800Brazilians.[14]

People fromCPLP countries thus number around 11,000 people, accounting for 0.19% of thepopulation of Denmark.[3] Despite being small, the immigrant community of people coming fromCPLP countries in Denmark is quite visible when compared to the ones in otherNordic countries: inFinland there are a little more than 5,000CPLP nationals (0.09% of thecountry's population),[15][16] inIceland there are around 2,000CPLP nationals (0.52% of thecountry's population),[17][18][19][20][21] while inNorway there are around 25,300CPLP nationals (0.38% of thepopulation)[22][18][23][24] and inSweden 26,700 (0.25% of thepopulation).[25][26][18][27]
