Portrait of a Man is an oil painting byTitian, made about 1515, now in theIndianapolis Museum of Art.[1]
It may have been the painting seen byCarlo Ridolfi inNicolas Régnier's house around 1648.[citation needed] It has traditionally been known asPortrait of Ariosto due to its similarity toA Man with a Quilted Sleeve, another Titian work previously thought to depictAriosto, and to a print of Ariosto in the 1532 edition ofOrlando Furioso.[2]
Its status as an autograph work by the artist is supported byBernard Berenson.[citation needed] Auctioned atSotheby's in London on 29 January 1930,[2] it passed to theBooth Tarkington collection in Indianapolis.[citation needed]
