Portrait of Sir Christopher Wren is an oil on canvasportrait painting by the German-born BritishartistGodfrey Kneller of the EnglisharchitectChristopher Wren, from 1711.[1] Wren, apolymath, is best known for his design ofSt Paul's Cathedral along with multiple other buildings in theEnglish Baroque style. It was painted during the reign ofQueen Anne, when the cathedral that Wren had designed many years earlier was nearing completion. He is shown as a veteran, established personality, at the age of seventy nine. His right hand holds a pair ofcompasses and rests on a plan of St Paul's.[2]
Kneller was the leadingportraitist in Britain of the lateseventeenth and earlyeighteenth century. The work was acquired by theNational Portrait Gallery inLondon in 1860. Copies exist inAll Souls, Oxford,Chelsea Hospital and thedeanery of St Paul's Cathedral.[3]
