Portrait of Banastre Tarleton is a 1782portrait painting by the EnglishartistSir Joshua Reynolds. It depicts the British army officerBanastre Tarleton against a background scene of battle, referring to his recent service in theAmerican War of Independence.[1] Tarleton is shown in the uniform of theBritish Legion, aunit ofAmerican Loyalistcavalry which he had served with before surrendering at theSiege of Yorktown in 1781.[2] Reynolds,President of the Royal Academy, was of the country's leading portraitists.
It was exhibited at theRoyal Academy'sSummer Exhibition in 1782.[3]Today it is in the collection of theNational Gallery inLondon.[4]
