Portland Inlet[1] is aninlet of thePacific Ocean on thenorth coast ofBritish Columbia, Canada, approximately 55 km (34 mi) north ofPrince Rupert. It joinsChatham Sound opposite theDixon Entrance. It is 40 km (25 mi) long and as much as 13 km (8.1 mi) wide. It drains thePortland Canal, Nass Bay (outlet of theNass River), andKhutzeymateen Inlet, among others, and is the site ofPearse Island and Somerville Island. Other major sidewaters of the inlet areObservatory Inlet and its east arm,Alice Arm.
Portland Inlet was mapped by theVancouver Expedition in 1793 and named Brown Inlet, withGeorge Vancouver later changing the name to honour the BritishHouse of Portland.[2]
