Inrail transport, atrain is avehicle or (more frequently) a string of vehicles capable of being moved along a continuous line ofrails or other guideway for the purpose of conveying freight or passengers between points on apredetermined route. The train may be hauled or propelled by one or more vehicles designed exclusively for that purpose (locomotives) or may be driven by a number of motors incorporated in all or several of the vehicles (multiple units).

As of 2018[update], there are approximately 1,052,000 kilometres (654,000 mi) of railway track in use worldwide. (World Bank (via Archive.org))

TheScarboroughMetro-North Railroad station servesScarborough-on-Hudson andBriarcliff Manor, New York, via theHudson Line. Trains leave forNew York City every 25 to 35 minutes on weekdays. The station is 28.7 miles (46.2 km) fromGrand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is about 42 minutes on theexpress and 61 minutes onlocal service. The Scarborough station is within walking distance of most houses in thehamlet. As of 2007[update], daily commuter ridership was 865. Trains stop at the station every hour, except duringpeak hours, when trains stop there two to four times per hour. Construction of the Scarborough station dates back to the 1860s, when the first station building stood along theHudson River Railroad, which was completed in 1851 and served areas from New York City toRensselaer. It became part of theMetropolitan Transportation Authority's Metro-North Railroad in 1983, when the service was created. The station was included in a revitalization plan in 2007 to help serve its commuters.
