TheFlag of Tennessee

Tennessee (/ˌtɛnɪˈs/ ,locally/ˈtɛnɪsi/), officially theState of Tennessee, is a landlockedstate in theSoutheastern region of theUnited States. It bordersKentucky to the north,Virginia to the northeast,North Carolina to the east,Georgia,Alabama, andMississippi to the south,Arkansas to the southwest, andMissouri to the northwest. Tennessee is the36th-largest by area and the15th-most populous of the 50 states. According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the state's estimated population as of 2024 is 7.22 million.

Tennessee is geographically, culturally, and legally divided into threeGrand Divisions ofEast,Middle, andWest Tennessee.Nashville is the state's capital and largest city, and anchors its largest metropolitan area. Tennessee has diverse terrain and landforms, and from east to west, contains a mix of cultural features characteristic ofAppalachia, theUpland South, and theDeep South. TheBlue Ridge Mountains along the eastern border reach some of the highest elevations in eastern North America, and theCumberland Plateau contains many scenic valleys andwaterfalls. The central part of the state is marked by cavernous bedrock and irregular rolling hills, and level, fertile plains define West Tennessee. The state is twice bisected by theTennessee River, and theMississippi River forms its western border. TheGreat Smoky Mountains National Park, the nation's most visited national park, is in eastern Tennessee.

Tennessee is rooted in theWatauga Association, a 1772 frontier pact generally regarded as the first constitutional government west of theAppalachian Mountains. Its name derives fromTanasi (ᏔᎾᏏ), aCherokee town preceding the first European American settlement. Tennessee was initially part of North Carolina, and later theSouthwest Territory, before its admission to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. It earned the nickname "The Volunteer State" due to a strong tradition of military service. Aslave state until theAmerican Civil War, Tennessee was politically divided, with most of its western and middle parts supporting theConfederacy, and most of the eastern region harboringpro-Union sentiment. As a result, Tennessee was the last state to officiallysecede from the Union and join theConfederacy, and the first formerConfederate state readmitted to the Union after the war had ended during theReconstruction era. Whiskey being aged atJack Daniel's Distillery inLynchburg

Tennessee whiskey isstraight whiskey produced in the U.S. state ofTennessee. Although it has been legally defined as abourbon whiskey in some international trade agreements, most current producers of Tennessee whiskey disclaim references to their products as "bourbon" and do not label them as such on any of their bottles or advertising materials. All current Tennessee whiskey producers are required by Tennessee law to produce their whiskeys in Tennessee and – with the sole exception ofBenjamin Prichard's – to use a filtering step known as theLincoln County Process prior to aging the whiskey. Beyond the perceived marketing value of the distinction, Tennessee whiskey and bourbon have almost identical requirements, and most Tennessee whiskeys meet the criteria for bourbon.

Tennessee whiskey is one of the top ten exports of Tennessee. According to theDistilled Spirits Council of the United States, as of 2013, the U.S. market for bourbon and Tennessee whiskey reached $2.4 billion, and exports of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey grew to exceed $1 billion. There are two major producers of Tennessee whiskey,Jack Daniel's based inLynchburg (owned by theLouisville-basedBrown–Forman) andGeorge Dickel based in Cascade Hollow nearTullahoma (owned by the London-basedDiageo), as well as numerous locally based producers throughout the state. In June 2017, the Tennessee Distillers Guild launched the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, a 25-stop distillery tour across the state, to further promote Tennessee whiskey and local whiskey culture.
