Sweden, formally theKingdom of Sweden, is aNordic country located on theScandinavian Peninsula inNorthern Europe. It bordersNorway to the west and north, andFinland to the east. At 450,295 square kilometres (173,860 sq mi), Sweden is the largest Nordic country by both area and population, and is thefifth-largest country in Europe. Its capital and largest city isStockholm. They are mostly in the central and southern half of the country. Sweden's urban areas together cover 1.5% of its land area. Sweden has a diverseclimate owing to the length of the country, which ranges from55°N to69°N.

Sweden has been inhabited sinceprehistoric times around 12,000 BC. The inhabitants emerged as theGeats (Swedish:Götar) andSwedes (Svear), who formed part of the sea-faring peoples known as theNorsemen. A unified Swedish state was established during the late 10th century. In 1397, Sweden joined Norway and Denmark to form the ScandinavianKalmar Union, which Sweden left in 1523. When Sweden became involved in theThirty Years' War on the Protestant side, an expansion of its territories began, forming theSwedish Empire, which remained one of thegreat powers of Europe until the early 18th century. During this era Swedencontrolled much of the Baltic Sea. Most of the conquered territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries. The eastern half of Sweden, present-day Finland, was lost toImperial Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Sweden by military means forced Norway into apersonal union, a union which lasted until 1905.

Midvinterblot (Swedish for "Midwinter sacrifice") is a painting by the Swedish painterCarl Larsson, created in 1915 for the hall of the central staircase inNationalmuseum inStockholm. It has been calledSweden's most controversial painting.

The painting depicts a legend fromNorse mythology in which the Swedish kingDomalde is sacrificed to avert famine. After long debate, the painting was rejected by the museum; but the controversy resurfaced in the late 20th century, and the painting finally was placed where Carl Larsson had intended. Battles (left to right from top):

TheScanian War (Danish:den Skånske Krig;Norwegian:den skånske krig;Swedish:det Skånska kriget;German:Schonischer Krieg) was a part of theNorthern Wars involving the union ofDenmark–Norway,Brandenburg andSweden. It was fought from 1675 to 1679 mainly onScanian soil, in the former Danish–Norwegian provinces along the border with Sweden, and in Northern Germany. While the latter battles are regarded as a theater of the Scanian war in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish historiography, they are seen as a separate war in Germanhistoriography, called theSwedish-Brandenburgian War (German:Schwedisch-Brandenburgischer Krieg).

The war was prompted by Swedish involvement in theFranco-Dutch War. Sweden had allied withFrance against several European countries. TheUnited Provinces, under attack by France, sought support from Denmark–Norway. After some hesitation, KingChristian V started the invasion ofSkåneland (Scania,Halland,Blekinge, and sometimes alsoBornholm) in 1675, while the Swedes were occupied witha war against Brandenburg. The invasion of Scania was combined with a simultaneous Norwegian front called theGyldenløve War, forcing the defending Swedes to fight atwo-front war in addition to their entanglements in theHoly Roman Empire. Rundkvist on a dig inAska [sv], 2020

Martin Rundkvist (born 4 April 1972) is a Swedisharchaeologist andassociate professor at theUniversity of Łódź in Poland. His research focuses on theBronze,Iron, andMiddle Ages ofScandinavia, including significant excavations in the province ofÖstergötland.

Rundkvist has studied and excavated various sites in Sweden, particularly in the country's south. In 2003 and 2004, he published a three-volume work which doubled as hisPhD dissertation, cataloguing the finds fromBarshalder [sv;de], the largest prehistoric cemetery on the Swedish island ofGotland. A subsequent book identified nine possible regional power centres in Östergötland, and attempted to determine where the "Beowulfian mead halls" of the day once stood. Excavating years later at one of these sites,Aska [sv], Rundkvist uncovered the foundations of a largemead hall, and 30 ornate gold figures that might have representedgods or royals. In other works, Rundkvist has excavated aVikingboat grave, and analysed both the placement of depositedartefacts in the landscape and the lifestyles of the Scandinavian élite during the Middle Ages.
