However, the use of the termsaint depends on the context anddenomination. Officialecclesiastical recognition, andveneration, is conferred on some denominational saints through the process ofcanonization in theCatholic Church orglorification in theEastern Orthodox Church after their approval. The saints are honored in the liturgical calendars ofEvangelical Lutheranism andAnglicanism. In other nonconformist denominations, such as thePlymouth Brethren, and following fromPauline usage, saint refers broadly to any holyChristian without special recognition or selection. While the English wordsaint (deriving from theLatinsanctus) originated in Christianity, historians of religion tend to use the appellation "in a more general way to refer to the state of special holiness that many religions attribute to certain people", referring to the Hindurishi, Sikhbhagat orguru, the Shintoistkami, the Taoistimmortal orzhenren, the Jewishtzadik, the Islamicwalī/fakir, and the Buddhistarhat orbodhisattva also as saints. Depending on the religion, saints are recognized either by official declaration, as in Roman Catholicism, Oriental Orthodoxy or Eastern Orthodoxy, or by popular acclamation (seefolk saint). He was the son ofEormenric, whom he succeeded as king, according to the Chronicle. He marriedBertha, daughter ofCharibert, king of theFranks, thus building an alliance with the most powerful state inWestern Europe at that time; the marriage probably took place before Æthelberht came to the throne. The influence of Bertha may have led toPope Gregory I’s decision to sendAugustine as amissionary fromRome. Augustine landed on theIsle of Thanet in east Kent in 597. Shortly thereafter, Æthelberht was converted to Christianity, churches were established and wider-scale conversion toChristianity began. Æthelberht provided the new church with land in Canterbury, at what came to be known asSt Augustine's Abbey, thus establishing one of the foundation-stones of what ultimately became the Anglican church. Æthelberht was latercanonised for his role in establishingChristianity among the Anglo-Saxons. Hisfeast day was originally February 24, but was changed to February 25. Did you know...
