Introduction

Nova Scotia is aprovince inThe Maritimes region ofCanada, located on the nation's east coast. With an estimated population of over 1 million as of 2025, Nova Scotia isthe most populous province inAtlantic Canada. Nova Scotia is also the second-most densely populated province in Canada, and the second smallest province by area. The province comprises theNova Scotia peninsula andCape Breton Island, as well as 3,800 other coastal islands. The province is connected to the rest of Canada by theIsthmus of Chignecto, on which the province's sole land border, withNew Brunswick, is located.

Nova Scotia'scapital and largest city isHalifax, which is home to over 45% of the province's population as of the2021 census. Halifax is thetwelfth-largest census metropolitan area in Canada, the largest municipality inAtlantic Canada, and Canada's second-largest coastal municipality afterVancouver.

In subsequent years, the British began settling "foreign Protestants" in the region anddeported the French-speaking Acadians en masse. During theAmerican Revolutionary War (1775–1783), thousands ofLoyalists settled in Nova Scotia. (Full article...)

Front of the town clock

TheHalifax Town Clock, sometimes called theOld Town Clock, is a historicclock tower located atCitadel Hill in the urban core ofHalifax, the capital city ofNova Scotia. Built in October 1803 under the direction ofPrince Edward, Duke of Kent, the clock has been in operation since 20 October 1803, stopping once during theHalifax Explosion. The Halifax Town Clock underwent significant restoration work in the 1960s.

The mechanism of the clock was built byBenjamin Vulliamy, who also built the Regulator Clock at theKing's Observatory in London. Its three iron bells were cast at theWhitechapel Bell Foundry, which also produced theLiberty Bell. (Full article...)

TheMace of the Province of Nova Scotia is an ornamentalceremonial mace which serves as a symbol of authority in theNova Scotia House of Assembly. The mace is constructed of gildedsterling silver, and was gifted to the House by Chief JusticeRobert Harris in March 1930. The Nova Scotia House of Assembly had ordered a mace to be procured as early as 1785, but these orders were not carried out, making the mace gifted by Harris the first to be used in the House. Charles Bruce FergussonCM (14 February 1911 – 20 September 1978) was a Canadian historian who served as the Provincial Archivist ofNova Scotia from 1956 to 1977. Under Fergusson's leadership, thePublic Archives of Nova Scotia began amicrofilm program, doubled its holdings of books and pamphlets, and saw a fivefold increase in visitors. He taught contemporary history at theNova Scotia Technical College from 1946 to 1950, and became an associate professor of history atDalhousie University in 1957. Fergusson authored and edited almost 100 books, articles, and pamphlets over the course of his career, the most well-known of which beingPlace-Names and Places of Nova Scotia (1967) andMembers of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia, 1758–1958 (1958).
