The Museums Portal

Amuseum is an institution dedicated to displaying andpreserving culturally or scientifically significant objects. Many museums have exhibitions of these objects on public display, and some have non-exhibited collections that are used byresearchers and specialists. Museums host a much wider range of objects than alibrary, and they usually focus on a specific theme, such as thearts, science, natural history orlocal history. Museums that host exhibitions and interactive demonstrations are oftentourist attractions, and many draw large numbers of visitors from outside of their host country, with themost visited museums in the world attracting millions of visitors annually.

Since the establishment ofthe earliest known museum inancient times, museums have been associated withacademia and the preservation of rare items. Museums originated as private collections ofinteresting items, and not until much later did the emphasis on educating the public take root. (Full article...)
