TheFlag of Missouri

Missouri (seepronunciation) is a landlockedstate in theMidwestern region of theUnited States. Ranking21st in land area, it bordersIowa to the north,Illinois,Kentucky andTennessee to the east,Arkansas to the south andOklahoma,Kansas, andNebraska to the west. In the south are theOzarks, a forested highland, providing timber, minerals, and recreation. At 1.5 billion years old, theSt. Francois Mountains are among the oldest in the world. TheMissouri River, after which the state is named, flows through the center and into theMississippi River, which forms the eastern border. With over six million residents, it is the19th-most populous state of the country. The largest urban areas areSt. Louis,Kansas City,Springfield, andColumbia. Thecapital isJefferson City.

Humans have inhabited present-day Missouri for at least 12,000 years. TheMississippian culture, which emerged in the ninth century, built cities with pyramidal and other ceremonialmounds before declining in the 14th century. The IndigenousOsage andMissouria nations inhabited the area when European people arrived in the 17th century. The French incorporated the territory intoLouisiana, foundingSte. Genevieve in 1735 andSt. Louis in 1764. After a brief period ofSpanish rule, the United States acquired Missouri as part of theLouisiana Purchase in 1803. Americans from theUpland South rushed into the newMissouri Territory, taking advantage of its productive agricultural plains; Missouri played a central role in the westward expansion of the United States. Missouri was admitted as a slave state as part of theMissouri Compromise of 1820. As aborder state,Missouri's role in theAmerican Civil War was complex, and it was subject to rival governments, raids, and guerilla warfare. After the war, bothGreater St. Louis and theKansas City metropolitan area became large centers of industrialization and business.

Today the state is divided into114 counties and theindependent city of St. Louis. Missouri has been called the "Gateway to the West", the "Mother of the West", the "Cave State", and the "Show Me State". Its culture blends elements of the Midwestern andSouthern United States. It is the birthplace of the musical genresragtime,Kansas City jazz andSt. Louis blues. The well-knownKansas City-style barbecue, and the lesser-knownSt. Louis-style barbecue, can be found across the state and beyond. (Full article...)

Thecapture of Sedalia occurred during theAmerican Civil War when aConfederate force captured theUniongarrison ofSedalia, Missouri, on October 15, 1864. ConfederateMajor GeneralSterling Price, who was a formerGovernor of Missouri and had commanded theMissouri State Guard in the early days of the war, hadlaunched an invasion into the state ofMissouri on August 29. He hoped to distract the Union from more important areas and cause a popular uprising against Union control of the state. Price had to abandon his goal of capturingSt. Louis after a bloody repulse at theBattle of Fort Davidson and moved into the pro-Confederate region ofLittle Dixie in central Missouri.

Many recruits in the region joined the Confederates in the region, and Price soon needed supplies and weapons for these men. He sent side raids toGlasgow and Sedalia. One of these involved sending a 1,200-manbrigade led byBrigadier GeneralM. Jeff Thompson of theMissouri State Guard towards Sedalia. Despite learning of Union movements in the area, Thompson attacked the town, which was primarily defended bymilitia. The initial Confederate attack quickly dispersed most of the defenders, although some held out until Thompson brought up the rest of his force. Many of the militiamen were captured. Afterparoling or releasing their prisoners and plundering the town, the Confederates left to rejoin Price's main force. On October 23, Price was defeated at theBattle of Westport nearKansas City. The Confederates then retreated, suffering defeats at the battles ofMine Creek andSecond Newtonia later in October, before eventually enteringTexas. (Full article...)
