TheFlag of Kentucky Montage of Kentucky Kentucky (US :/k ən ˈ t ʌ k i / ⓘ ,UK :/k ɛ n -/ ), officially theCommonwealth of Kentucky , is a landlockedstate in theSoutheastern region of theUnited States . It bordersIllinois ,Indiana , andOhio to the north,West Virginia to the northeast,Virginia to the east,Tennessee to the south, andMissouri to the west. Its northern border is defined by theOhio River . Its capital isFrankfort and itsmost populous city isLouisville . As of 2024, the state's population was approximately 4.6 million.
Previously a part ofcolonial Virginia , Kentucky was admitted into the Union as the fifteenth state on June 1, 1792. It is known as the "Bluegrass State" in reference toKentucky bluegrass , a species of grass introduced by European settlers, which has long supported the state'sthoroughbred horse industry.
The fertile soil in the central and western parts of the state led to the development of large tobacco plantations similar to those in Virginia andNorth Carolina , which utilizedenslaved labor prior to the passage of theThirteenth Amendment . Kentucky ranks fifth nationally in goat farming, eighth inbeef cattle production, and fourteenth in corn production. While Kentucky has been a long-standing center for the tobacco industry, its economy has diversified into non-agricultural sectors including auto manufacturing, energy production, and medicine. John Cabell Breckinridge (January 16, 1821 – May 17, 1875) was an American politician who served as the 14thvice president of the United States , withPresident James Buchanan , from 1857 to 1861, as a general in theConfederate Army during theAmerican Civil War . Assuming office at the age of 36, Breckinridge is theyoungest vice president in U.S. history . He was also theSouthern Democratic candidate in the1860 presidential election , losing to antislaveryRepublican candidateAbraham Lincoln .
Breckinridge was born nearLexington, Kentucky , to aprominent local family . After serving as a noncombatant during theMexican–American War , he was elected as a Democrat to theKentucky House of Representatives in 1849, where he took apro-slavery stance. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1851, he allied withStephen A. Douglas in support of theKansas–Nebraska Act . Afterreapportionment in 1854 made his re-election unlikely, he declined to run for another term. He was nominated for vice president at the1856 Democratic National Convention tobalance a ticket headed byJames Buchanan . The Democrats won theelection , but Breckinridge had little influence with Buchanan, and as presiding officer of the Senate, could not express his opinions in debates. He joined Buchanan in supporting the proslaveryLecompton Constitution for Kansas, which led to a split in the Democratic Party. In 1859, he was elected to succeed SenatorJohn J.
