Afilm is a form ofvisual art that simulates experiences and communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, emotions, or atmosphere through moving images. Since the 1930s, most films have been produced assynchronized sound works and may include music, dialogue, and other sensory elements.

Films may be created by recording real scenes usingcameras or produced throughanimation, digital imagery, orspecial effects. They consist of a sequence of individualframes which, when projected rapidly—commonly at 24 frames per second—create the illusion of continuous motion. This effect is attributed topersistence of vision and cognitive phenomena such as thebeta movement, which make a stream of still images appear fluid and moving. (Full article...)

Cecil Blount DeMille (/ˈsɛsəldəˈmɪl/; August 12, 1881 – January 21, 1959), often known in popular culture asMr. DeMille, was an American filmmaker and actor. Between 1914 and 1958, he made 70 features, bothsilent andsound films. He is acknowledged as a founding father ofAmerican cinema and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history, with many films dominating the box office three or four at a time. His films were distinguished by their epic scale and by his cinematic showmanship. His silent films included social dramas, comedies, Westerns, farces, morality plays, and historical pageants.

Born inAshfield, Massachusetts and raised in New York City, DeMille began his career as a stage actor in 1900. He later began to write and direct stage plays, a few with his older brotherWilliam de Mille, and some withJesse L. Lasky, who was then avaudeville producer. DeMille's first film,The Squaw Man (1914), was the first full-length feature film shot inHollywood. Its interracial love story was commercially successful, and the film marked Hollywood as the new home of the U.S. film industry. Based on continued film successes, DeMille founded Famous Players Lasky which was later reverse merged intoParamount Pictures with Lasky andAdolph Zukor. His first biblical epic,The Ten Commandments (1923), was both a critical and commercial success; it held the Paramount revenue record for 25 years. (Full article...)

Selected quote

Woody Allen
I think that the tendency for most people is to fall back on a comic interpretation of things -- because things are so sad, so terrible. If you didn't laugh you'd kill yourself. But the truth of the matter is that existence in general is very very tragic, very very sad, very brutal and very unhappy.
