Introduction

Conservatism is acultural, social, andpolitical philosophy andideology that seeks to promote and preserve traditionalinstitutions, customs, andvalues. The central tenets of conservatism may vary in relation to theculture andcivilization in which it appears. InWestern culture, depending on the particular nation and the particular time period, conservatives seek to promote and preserve a range of institutions, such as thenuclear family, organized religion, themilitary, thenation-state,property rights, rule of law, aristocracy, andmonarchy.

The 18th-century Anglo-Irish statesmanEdmund Burke, who opposed theFrench Revolution but supported theAmerican Revolution, is credited as one of the forefathers of conservative thought in the 1790s along with Savoyard statesmanJoseph de Maistre. The first established use of the term in a political context originated in 1818 withFrançois-René de Chateaubriand during the period ofBourbon Restoration that sought to roll back the policies of the French Revolution and establish social order.

Conservatism has varied considerably as it has adapted itself to existing traditions and national cultures. Thus, conservatives from different parts of the world, each upholding their respective traditions, may disagree on a wide range of issues. One of the three major ideologies along withliberalism andsocialism, conservatism is the dominant ideology in many nations across the world, includingHungary,India,Iran,Israel,Italy,Japan,Poland,Russia,Singapore, andSouth Korea. Historically associated withright-wing politics, the term has been used to describea wide range of views. Conservatism may be eitherlibertarian orauthoritarian, populist orelitist, progressive orreactionary, moderate orextreme. (Full article...)

SirJohn Alexander Macdonald (1815 – 1891) was thefirstPrime Minister ofCanada. The dominant figure ofCanadian Confederation, his political career spanned almost half a century. Macdonald served almost nineteen years as Canadian Prime Minister; he is surpassed in tenure only byWilliam Lyon Mackenzie King.

When in 1864 no party proved capable of governing for long, Macdonald agreed to a proposal from his political rival,George Brown, that the parties unite in aGreat Coalition to seek federation and political reform. Macdonald was the leading figure in the subsequent discussions and conferences, which resulted in theBritish North America Act and the birth of Canada as a nation on 1 July 1867. Macdonald was designated as the first Prime Minister of the new nation, and served in that capacity for most of the remainder of his life. Macdonald is credited with obtaining Confederation despite many obstacles, and expanding what was a relatively small colony to cover the northern half of North America.
