The Cars Portal

TheFord Model T, produced from 1908 to 1927, is widely credited with being the first mass-affordable automobile, and it remains one of thebest-selling cars of all time.

Acar, or anautomobile, is amotor vehicle withwheels. Most definitions of cars state that they run primarily onroads, seat 1-8 people, have four wheels, and mainly transportpeople rather thancargo. There are around 1.644 billion cars in use worldwide as of January 2025.

The French inventorNicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered road vehicle in 1769, while the Swiss inventorFrançois Isaac de Rivaz designed and constructed the first internal combustion-powered automobile in 1808. The modern car—a practical, marketable automobile for everyday use—was invented in 1886, when the German inventorCarl Benz patented hisBenz Patent-Motorwagen. Commercial cars became widely available during the 20th century. The 1901Oldsmobile Curved Dash and the 1908Ford Model T, both American cars, are widely considered the first mass-produced and mass-affordable cars, respectively. Cars were rapidly adopted in the US, where they replacedhorse-drawn carriages. In Europe and other parts of the world, demand for automobiles did not increase untilafter World War II. In the 21st century, car usage is still increasing rapidly, especially in China, India, and othernewly industrialised countries.

Cars have controls fordriving, parking, passenger comfort, and a variety oflamps. Over the decades, additional features and controls have been added to vehicles, making them progressively more complex. These includerear-reversing cameras, air conditioning, navigation systems, andin-car entertainment. Most cars in use in the early 2020s are propelled by aninternal combustion engine, fueled by thecombustion offossil fuels.Electric cars, which were invented early in thehistory of the car, became commercially available in the 2000s and widespread in the 2020s. The transition from fossil fuel-powered cars to electric cars features prominently in mostclimate change mitigation scenarios. (Full article...)

Ford Falcon (BA II) Futura sedan

TheFord Falcon (BA) is afull-sized car produced byFord Australia from 2002 to 2005. It was the second significantly re-engineered iteration of the sixth generation of theFalcon, and also included theFord Fairmont (BA)—the luxury-oriented version. This platform also formed the basis of theFord Territorysport utility vehicle.

To address the relatively poor reception of the precedingAU series, the BA series was heavily updated for launch in September 2002—the same time as its biggest rival, theHolden Commodore (VY). It featured a substantially revised and more conservative exterior styling, with every panel new except for the carry-over door skins. Interiors, too, were substantially revised, while mechanically, a newindependent rear suspension setup was fitted to all sedan derivatives and the engine and transmissions received extensive upgrades. In October 2004, Ford introduced a Mark II update, bringing subtle styling and mechanical changes, and in October 2005, replaced the BA with theBF. (Full article...)

Selected quote of the day

It was Holden working at its best, doing a lot with a little. Some of the subterfuge we got up to to make things happen was probably more risky than we realised, but it was worth it.
