Porilainen (Finnish pronunciation:[ˈpo.ri.lɑi̯.nen]) is asandwich andstreet food dish inFinnish cuisine made fromwhite bread and a thick slice ofsausage, normallyjagdwurst (jahtimakkara). Additional ingredients may include dicedsweet onion, choppedpickled cucumber,ketchup,mustard, and in some casesmayonnaise orfried egg.[1]
The nameporilainen may be apun on the wordpurilainen ('burger'). While it literally means "something originating from the city ofPori", the dish was invented in the 1950s by students atSatakuntalainen Osakunta, one of thestudent nations of theUniversity of Helsinki.[2] Nevertheless, the dish has been adopted by Pori and it is now considered a kind oftraditional food of the locality.[3]
