Pope Jacob ordainedAbuna Yohannes as the head of theEthiopian Orthodox Church, according to theHistory of the Patriarchs of Alexandria; however, civil war, drought, and plague inEthiopia forced Yohannes to return toAlexandria, where he remained through Pope Jacob's tenure.
