Pontinia is acomune (municipality) in theProvince of Latina in theItalian regionLazio, located about 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast ofRome and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southeast ofLatina.
Pontinia was established in 1935, as part of the project under Prime MinisterBenito Mussolini which drained thePontine Marshes and converted them to agriculture.[3] The town plan was designed by engineer Alfredo Pappalardo, an employee of the Opera Nazionale Combattenti, the agency which oversaw the engineering works and settlement of the Pontine Marshes.
