ThePhongolo River is a river inSouth Africa. It is a tributary of theMaputo River. It rises nearUtrecht in northernKwaZulu-Natal, flows east throughoPhongolo, is dammed atPongolapoort, and crosses theUbombo Mountains; then it flows north towardsMozambique, joining the Maputo River.[2]
Its main tributaries are theBivane River and theMozana River in South Africa, as well as theNgwavuma inEswatini.[3]
The name of the uPhongolo River is derived from theisiZulu word for abarrel, vat, trough, or cask, referring to the deep and sometimes long pools that are found in this river.[4][5]
