Thegens Pomptina was a minorplebeian family atancient Rome. Thegens is best known fromGaius Pomptinus,praetor in 63 BC, who helped suppress theconspiracy of Catiline, and later defeated theAllobroges. Few of the Pomptini appear in history, but others are known from inscriptions.[1]

Origin

ThenomenPomptinus seems to be derived from the region of thePomptine Marshes, in southeasternLatium. This area was brought under Roman control following the defeat of theVolscians in 358 BC, and thetribus Pomptina organized. The Pomptini might be of eitherLatin or Volscian origin. In different sources, the nomen can be found asPomptinius,Pontinius, andPomtinus.[1]

  • Gaius Pomptinus, alegate underMarcus Licinius Crassus during theThird Servile War, and praetor in 63 BC, where he assisted theconsulMarcus Tullius Cicero suppress the conspiracy ofCatiline. He was then assigned the province ofGallia Narbonensis, and defeated the Allobroges, although he did not obtain atriumph until 54.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
  • Pomptinus, built a tomb for his wife, Audasia Charitu, aged thirty, atTheveste inAfrica Proconsularis. Perhaps the same person as Pomptinus Primitius, the heir of Gaius Audasius Succedens.[8]
  • Gaius Pomptinus, a soldier stationed at Rome in AD 70.[9]
  • Quintus Pomptinus Q. f., named in an inscription from Rome.[10]
  • Sextus Pomptinus, named in an inscription from Rome.[11]
  • Titus Pontinius,primus pilus in thefifth legion, buried atAmeria inUmbria, during the first half of the first century.[12]
  • Quintus Pontinius Capito, one of theSeviri Augustales, according to an inscription fromAvennio inGallia Narbonensis.[13]
  • Gaius Pomptinus C. l. Eros, a freedman named in an inscription from Rome.[14]
  • Gaius Pomptinus Eutychus, named in a funerary inscription from Rome.[15]
  • Gaius Pomptinus C. l. Fortunatus, a freedman named in an inscription from Rome.[16]
  • Gaius Pontinius Magnus, built a tomb at Rome for his wife, Valeria, aged twenty-three.[17]
  • Gaius Pomptinus Phoebus, a soldier stationed at Rome in AD 70.[9]
  • Gaius Pomptinus Postumus, named in an inscription from Rome.[18]
  • Pomptinus Primitius, perhaps the same Pomptinus who married Audasia Charitu, one of the heirs of Gaius Audasius Succedens, according to a funerary inscription fromTheveste.[19]
  • Gaius Pomptinus C. l. Probus, a freedman named in an inscription from Rome.[20]
  • Gaius Pomptinus Proculus, named in an inscription from Rome.[18]
  • Gaius Pomptinus Saturninus, a soldier stationed at Rome in AD 70.[9][18]
  • Gaius Pomptinius Superbus, named in an inscription fromConsoranni inAquitania.[21]
