ThePomahaka River is inSouth Otago inNew Zealand'sSouth Island. It is a tributary of theClutha River, flowing south for 80 kilometres (50 mi) from theOld Man Range / Kopuwai mountains to join the Clutha about 15 km west ofBalclutha. Along its path it passes theBlue Mountains and theforestry town ofTapanui in the area known locally asWest Otago.
For a short part of its length, the river forms the boundary betweenOtago andSouthland regions.
Majorflooding of the Pomahaka in 1978 led to the relocation of the town ofKelso and caused damage severe enough to lead to the closure of theTapanui Branchrailway.
