Poitevin–Saintongeais (French pronunciation:[pwatvɛ̃sɛ̃tɔ̃ʒɛ];endonym:poetevin-séntunjhaes;[3] also calledParlanjhe,Aguiain orAguiainais in French) is a language spoken in theregions of thePays de la Loire andNouvelle-Aquitaine. Poitevin–Saintongeais is officially recognised by theFrench Ministry of Culture as a language with two dialects:Poitevin andSaintongeais.[4] The language belongs to thelangues d'oïl subbranch of theGallo-Romance languages.
Some descendants of Poitevin–Saintongeais speakers became theAcadian people of Atlantic Canada as well as theCajun people ofLouisiana.[citation needed]
The dialects of this language are peculiar to the historical regions and provinces ofPoitou andSaintonge. It is classified asseverely endangered byUNESCO.[5]
