Pohnpeic, also renderedPonapeic, is a subgroup of theChuukic–Pohnpeic branch ofMicronesian in theAustronesian language family.[1] The languages are primarily spoken inPohnpei State of theFederated States of Micronesia.
Pohnpeic languages are distinct from the closely relatedChuukic languages as a result of uniquely developed innovations. One such innovation is nasal substitution, where the first element in a consonantgeminate becomes ahomorganicnasal consonant.[3] An example of this change is seen where Proto-Chuukic-Pohnpeic */kkaŋ/ 'sharp' becameMokilese/iŋkɔŋ/, whereas inChuukese it is/kken/.[4]
