Thespadebills are agenus,Platyrinchus, of Central and South Americanpasserine birds in the tyrant flycatcher familyTyrannidae. They have broad, flat, triangular bills.

The genus was erected by the French zoologistAnselme Gaëtan Desmarest in 1805 with thewhite-crested spadebill (Platyrinchus platyrhynchos) as thetype species.[2][3] The namePlatyrhynchos is from theAncient Greekplatus "broad" andrhunkhos "bill".[4]
