Plato Tiburtinus (Latin:Plato Tiburtinus, "Plato ofTivoli";fl. 12th century) was a 12th-centuryItalianmathematician,astronomer andtranslator who lived inBarcelona from 1116 to 1138.[1] He is best known for translatingHebrew andArabic documents intoLatin, and was apparently the first to translate information on theastrolabe (an astronomical instrument) from Arabic.

Plato of Tivoli translated the Arab astrologerAlbohali's "Book of Birth" into Latin in 1136.[2] He translatedClaudius Ptolemy'sTetrabiblos from Arabic to Latin in 1138,[3] the astronomical works ofal-Battani,Theodosius'Spherics and theLiber Embadorum byAbraham bar Chiia.[4]He has worked together with the Jewish mathematicianSavasorda (Abraham Bar Ḥiyya Ha-Nasi). His manuscripts were widely circulated and were among others used byAlbertus Magnus andFibonacci.
