12th-century Italian astronomer and mathematician
Plato Tiburtinus (Latin :Plato Tiburtinus , "Plato ofTivoli ";fl . 12th century) was a 12th-centuryItalian mathematician ,astronomer andtranslator who lived inBarcelona from 1116 to 1138.[ 1] He is best known for translatingHebrew andArabic documents intoLatin , and was apparently the first to translate information on theastrolabe (an astronomical instrument) from Arabic.
Quadripartitum , 1622Plato of Tivoli translated the Arab astrologerAlbohali 's "Book of Birth" into Latin in 1136.[ 2] He translatedClaudius Ptolemy 'sTetrabiblos from Arabic to Latin in 1138,[ 3] the astronomical works ofal-Battani ,Theodosius'Spherics and theLiber Embadorum byAbraham bar Chiia .[ 4] He has worked together with the Jewish mathematicianSavasorda (Abraham Bar Ḥiyya Ha-Nasi ). His manuscripts were widely circulated and were among others used byAlbertus Magnus andFibonacci .
