Planet Marathi anIndian filmproduction company founded by Akshay Bardapurkar in 2017, is based inMumbai and is solely focused on producingMarathi language films and web series.[2][3] Within a short span, it has emerged as one of the most prominent and prolific production houses in the industry.[4][5]

History

Planet Marathi was established in May 2017 by entrepreneur Akshay Bardapurkar with the vision of carving a global place for Marathi films, arts, and culture.[6][7] Before venturing into film production, Bardapurkar launched Planet Marathi Talent, a talent management hub that collaborated with several notable celebrities, includingShivani Baokar,Kranti Redkar,Nikhil Chavan,Amruta Khanvilkar,Siddharth Jadhav andSayali Sanjeev.[2] The company’s debut production wasAB Aani CD, directed by Milind Lele, featuringVikram Gokhale andAmitabh Bachchan (marking his Marathi film debut). The film's theatrical release was disrupted by theCOVID-19 pandemic in India but was later made available onAmazon Prime Video.[8] Additionally,Prasad Oak’s directorial ventureChandramukhi, produced byPlanet Marathi, was the first big-budget Marathi film to commence shooting post-pandemic, which marked a significant milestone for the industry.[9] In June 2021, June was the first film to be release directly on Planet Marathi OTT.[10]

In 2021, the company launchedPlanet Marathi OTT, India’s firstsubscription-based video-on-demandstreaming platform dedicated to Marathi content.[11]
