Thetype species isP. macayai.[1] Thegeneric name is derived fromMapudungunpitekun, meaning "to discover", theepitheton honours the discoverer, oil company explorer Luis Macaya, who found thefossil in April 2004.
Pitekunsaurus appears to be a genus ofaeolosaurid, most closely related to the generaGondwanatitan andAeolosaurus.[2] Its braincase closely resembles that of the aeolosauridMuyelensaurus as well as the titanosaursincertae sedisVahiny andJainosaurus.[3][4] It cannot be compared to the more closely relatedAeolosaurus andGondwanatitan in this regard, as neither genus is known from cranial material.
