InMandaean cosmology,Piriawis (Classical Mandaic:ࡐࡉࡓࡉࡀࡅࡉࡎ,Modern Mandaic pronunciation:[piriˈawis]; sometimes also spelledBiriawišࡁࡉࡓࡉࡀࡅࡉࡔ[1]), also known as theYardena Rabba (Classical Mandaic:ࡉࡀࡓࡃࡍࡀ ࡓࡁࡀ,romanized: Yardna Rba "GreatJordan"), is the sacred life-giving river (yardna) of theWorld of Light. It is theheavenly counterpart of rivers on Earth (Tibil), which are considered by Mandaeans to be manifestations of the heavenly Piriawis.[2][3][4]

Shilmai andNidbai are the two guardianuthras (celestial beings) watching over Piriawis.[2]

Qulasta prayers13 and17 mentionPiriawis-Ziwa and Piriafil-Malaka together asuthras.[5]

Other names

In Book 4 of theRight Ginza,Sindiriawis is mentioned as "the greatyardna of the Life" (sindiriauis, iardna rba ḏ-hiia).[2]
