ThePinacanauan River, also known as thePinacanauan de Tuguegarao, is atributary of theCagayan River located in the province inCagayan, in the northern portion ofLuzon in the Philippines. With a length of 46 kilometres (29 mi), the river originates in theSierra Madre[2] and passes through thePeñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape,[1] with largekarst formations, underground chambers, and rare wild flora, before entering the Cagayan River inTuguegarao, Cagayan.[2] The Pinacanauan is considered one of the most scenic attractions inCagayan, passing beside theCallao Cave system.[3]

Due to its moderate to medium-quick rapid further upstream, it is a popular place forrafting andkayaking. The place is surrounded by mountains for hiking, climbing andspelunking. Boat races take place on this river every year on April 21.[4]

The namePinacanauan is also used to refer to three upstream tributaries of the Cagayan River in neighboringIsabela Province that also originate from the Sierra Madre. These are thePinacanauan de Cabagan or thePinacanauan de San Pablo, which stretches for 46 kilometers and joins the Cagayan River in the boundaries of the towns ofSan Pablo andCabagan, thePinacanauan de Tumauini, which stretches for 35 kilometers before joining the Cagayan River inTumauini, and thePinacanauan de Ilagan or theIlagan River, which stretches for 40 kilometers before joining the Cagayan River inIlagan.[2]
